Human Sculpture wins the 2006 Bridgestone Photo Contest

Montréal (Québec) February 1, 2007 – A picture is said to be worth a thousand words. But for Cégep de Matane photography student Sacha Wewiorski it’s also worth $3,500, as the Grand Prize winner and top-prize recipient of his school in the 2006 Bridgestone Photo Contest.

The contest, in its fifth year, requires students enrolled in commercial photography studies at 12 pre-selected Canadian post-secondary schools, from coast to coast, to photograph a Bridgestone-brand tire in an artistic manner that complements their photographic abilities. A three-member jury, representing the photography and journalism professions, selected this year’s winner from among the 269 photo entries by some 157 students.

Wewiorski is a native of l’île de la Réunion who resides in Madagascar. He moved back to l’île de la Réunion from 1999 to 2005, the year in which that country’s government awarded him a grant to study as an exchange student in Canada. He is in his second year of a three-year photography program at Cégep de Matane. He was presented with the Grand Prize at a ceremony last night at Montreal’s Dawson College.

Wewiorski whose winning entry depicts four humans around a set of Bridgestone tires to form a car, said the concept is based on a human sculpture. “Eventually, I’d like to do sculpturing, and photography provides me with an artistic base and helps me have a better understanding of my surroundings”.

“Winning the top prize is a great honour and a source of pride for my family back in Madagascar,” he added. “Not everyone has had the opportunity that I’ve had – to be able to be among about 100 île de la Réunion students in this exchange program. I have been saving to visit my family in Madagascar this spring, because I haven’t seen them in four years. Winning this award will certainly help in this regard.”

Prizes were also given for the top three photos in each of the 12 schools. The jury awarded a new prize this year, an Honourable Mention to Dawson College student Nasuna Stuart-Ulin for a photo also deserving of national recognition for its distinctive approach. Stuart-Ulin’s photo depicted an evergreen growing inside a Bridgestone tire. She described the photo as symbolizing longevity and all seasons and making a link with environmental issues we face today.

“It’s the first time I ever entered a contest,” said Stuart-Ulin, who is enrolled in the three-year Professional Photography program at Dawson College. Winning the prize is encouraging, and it shows me that my work has the power to affect other people. That, ultimately, is my goal as a photographer.”

The Bridgestone Firestone Photo Contest, inaugurated in 2002 to celebrate the creativity of Canadians enrolled in photography programs, evokes the same innovative spirit and passion for excellence that mirror one of Bridgestone’s core values: providing superior products with leading-edge technology. The student photographers combined their imagination with advancements in photographic equipment to produce works that are rooted in professionalism.

“Clearly, from the diversity and quality of photographs received for this year’s contest, a considerable amount of time, effort and thought has gone into presenting tires in a different context,” remarked Jeremy Smith, Public Affairs Manager for Bridgestone Firestone Canada. “This has produced a collection of artistic works that showcase the outstanding ability of Canadian photographers across the country and elevate the status of the humble tire. All of the photographers who submitted entries to the contest are to be congratulated for their efforts.”
